The Global Career Chronicles | Part 3: From Lonely Scholar to Global Authority
"At, in the early stage of my career, I was a lonely scholar... But I realized that it's not going to work in the long run. So I needed to do something different to make a move."
Welcome to the epic finale of our three-part deep dive into S2.E7 of the Fireside Chat: The Global Career with Lavagnon Ika, Latifa Baba and Temisan Sagay.
In Part 1, we learned that sheer hard work is an illusion and unlearning is mandatory. In Part 2, we confronted the reality of cultural software and the necessity of finding an internal decoder. Today, in Part 3, we destroy the myth of the solo genius. We explore how to step out of the shadows, leverage the law of marginal utility, and have the unshakeable audacity to fill gaps on a global stage.
Opening Moment: The 4-Year Stagnation
During the live session, Prof. Lavagnon shared the painful reality of working in a vacuum. After writing what he thought was a brilliant paper on project success during his doctorate, he received mediocre feedback at a conference. Discouraged, he incubated the work alone. "So then I sat down on it for four years. It took me four years to finally be able to publish the paper," he admitted. Isolation turns minor setbacks into massive delays. It wasn't until he changed his strategy and reached out for collaboration that the paper eventually became his most cited work, boasting over 1,700 citations.
1. The "Kernel of Contribution" Strategy
Immigrant professionals often fall into the trap of over-relying on solitary hard work. We stay in our silos, keep our heads down, and attempt to build a masterpiece in the dark so that no one can question our competence. Prof. Lavagnon experienced this firsthand, realizing that the "lonely scholar" route was actively delaying his global impact.
It wasn't until he changed his approach that he found global success. He completed the foundational work on a paper and then approached an established star in the industry. He didn't ask for a handout or a favor; he brought a tangible "kernel of a contribution" to the table, positioning it as a mutual opportunity. You must bring foundational value that helps established leaders advance their own goals.
"I will write the whole paper to showcase something. And then I'm going to say to a well-established scholar, the star, look at this. There is a kernel of a contribution there. I read your older stuff you might be interested in that." - Prof. Lavagnon Ika
Insights ๐:
- Isolation is the enemy of impact; incubating brilliant ideas in a vacuum guarantees they will stagnate.
- You cannot approach global leaders empty-handed; you must bring a foundational piece of work that adds to their existing momentum.
- Aligning your foundational work with someone who already has an established platform exponentially increases your own visibility.
Actions ๐ ๏ธ:
- Identify a thought leader or senior executive you admire, read their latest work, and find an area where you can add a unique, complementary insight.
- Draft a 1-page proposal or executive summary to share with them, positioning it as a collaborative opportunity rather than a request for mentorship.
Quick Win โ :
- Leave a highly thoughtful, value-adding comment on a post from an industry star today, demonstrating your expertise publicly without asking for anything in return.
2. The Audacity to Fill the Gap
You do not need to wait for a formal invitation to build your global brand. Temisan actively looked for spaces where organizations were bleeding talent or lacking resources, offering himself as the immediate solution. When a machine learning guru suddenly pulled out of a massive PMI Global project, he raised his hand to analyze over 2,000 global responses, despite having zero prior experience in data analysis.
He did not let the lack of immediate competence deter him. While the rest of the team slept or socialized, he spent the night learning SQL and Python on YouTube to deliver the results the next day. By stepping into a massive gap and saving the project,
"If you see gaps, you just ask. Right? ... the project lead now became a sponsor for me too, more so an advocate because she could see what she's advocating for me for in terms of the skills and values that will bring." - Temisan Sagay
Insights ๐:
- The biggest career accelerators often appear as abandoned projects or sudden crises that no one else wants to touch.
- You don't need to know everything before you volunteer; you just need the audacity to commit and the discipline to learn it quickly.
- Taking ownership of terrifying gaps forces the organization to see you as a leader, transforming casual observers into invested sponsors.
Actions ๐ ๏ธ:
- Look around your current department and find the one task or project that keeps getting delayed because "no one has the skillset."
- Propose a 30-day pilot where you take complete ownership of that specific gap, committing to learning the required mechanics on the fly.
Quick Win โ :
- Watch a 15-minute tutorial today on a high-value software or skill (like basic SQL, PowerBI, or AI prompting) that is slightly outside your current job description.
3. Translational vs. Transactional Networking
We must face a hard truth about building connections: transactional networking is dead. If you only build relationships when you need a job or a favor, executives can smell the desperation from a mile away. To build a truly global career, you must move away from the transactional mindset ("I do for you, so you do for me") and focus entirely on creating translational value.
During the session, I shared the brutal reality of how I built my own global network. Every other month, I host a free global webinar for PMI Global. It costs me hours of preparation, but every single time I host one, it generates leads and paid opportunities that put money directly in my pocket. I built my platform by offering massive, translational value to my community first, without ever presenting an invoice for my goodwill.
"In marginal utility, you're not looking at transactional value. You're looking at translational value. What can I do for Patrick that would enable Patrick to do more for whoever Patrick is saving? I don't need to get nothing from Patrick." - Dr. Charles
Igwe
Insights ๐:
- Demonstrating your expertise for free on a global platform is the ultimate lead-generation strategy for your personal brand.
- If you arrive late to a new country and no one gives you a platform, you must create one by leveraging volunteer networks to offer immense value.
- Consistently showing up and delivering value trains the market to associate your name with authority long before you ever make a pitch.
Actions ๐ ๏ธ:
- Identify one global organization or local community group and volunteer to host a webinar, write a blog, or lead a specialized training session.
- Package a complex topic you know deeply into a free 1-page guide or presentation to share with your network with zero strings attached.
Quick Win โ :
- Post a highly valuable, actionable piece of advice related to your industry on LinkedIn today, explicitly asking for absolutely nothing in return.
4. Validating Your Latent Greatness
We often wait for a manager or an organization to tell us we are ready for the next level. Yenga reminded us that the gatekeeper is usually staring back at us in the mirror; you cannot ask a sponsor to risk their political capital on you if your own belief is fragile. We walk around with greatness trapped inside ourselves, waiting for someone else to validate it.
During an audience interaction about starting over from scratch, Kevin Judge destroyed the premise that any immigrant professional ever starts from zero. We all have skills; the challenge is recognizing how your existing toolkit can solve the specific needs of a new market. You must sell yourself on your own vision before anyone else will buy into it.
"I actually don't think I would wake up with no skills. I think that we all have skills. It's just a matter of you recognize what those skills are and how they can help other people with the needs that they have, right?" โ Kevin Judge
Insights ๐:
- As an immigrant professional, you never start from zero; you bring a massive reservoir of latent, highly transferable skills.
- Success isn't about endlessly acquiring new certifications; it is about matching the skills you already have to the urgent needs of others.
- Seeking external validation for internal greatness is a surefire way to remain stagnant; sponsors amplify confidence, they don't manufacture it.
Actions ๐ ๏ธ:
- Conduct a "Transferable Skills Audit." List three soft skills you mastered in your home country (e.g., crisis management, negotiation) and map them directly to a Canadian job requirement.
- Write a "Manifesto of Competence"โa single page detailing exactly why you are qualified for the room you want to be in, and read it before high-stakes meetings.
Quick Win โ :
- Ask a peer what they believe your most valuable "hidden" skill isโsomething you do naturally but rarely advertise on your resume.
Closing Note: Your Global Blueprint
Building a global career is not a solo endeavor. It requires the strategic generosity to offer translational value, the self-validation to own your greatness, the courage to jump into terrifying gaps, and the wisdom to build a community that will catch you when you fall. You are not starting from scratch; you are simply building on a new foundation.
